Being a broke-ass boozehound, sometimes I have to find alternatives to more expensive liquors or liqueurs. Sometimes there is no good substitute, as in the case of Chartreuse ($45 min for something I will rarely use but want so badly). The monks perfected the recipe over 100 years... DeKuyper ain't got nothing on them. I was faced with a dilemma the other day - I needed a high quality bourbon, but I already have several small bottles of EXTRA high quality bourbon, and I was looking for a 1.75 L to use for mixed drinks, but GOOD mixed drinks (I am not a Jim Beam fan). Makers is usually my go-to, but all the liquor stores I went to had it for $50 or more, and I still wanted to get a few other things. So I took a huge risk and bought Larceny for $35 on sale from $45. It's not quite as sweet as Makers, but it is a touch smoother and smokier. It's not my new favorite, but it worked wonderfully as an old fashioned.I also purchased some Fee Brothers Cherry Bitters, and it is delicious. Almost like a cherry cough syrup, but not as harsh, and a little sweeter. Perfect in old fashioneds (alongside Fee Bros Orange Bitters), or in Manhattans.
